Venkatachalam told reporters in Perundurai on Monday that he had sent a letter informing party president and former chief minister M K Stalin of his decision.
“I worked with the determination that this constituency must be won. But despite our hard efforts, we lost the opportunity,” he said.
He said bitter experience he had faced as the district secretary and during the assembly elections had deeply affected him and his supporters.
