NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of journalists’ allegations against police

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC ) has taken suo motu cognisance of complaints filed by three journalists alleging misconduct by Delhi Police during a protest at Jantar Mantar and has sought a detailed report from the Delhi Police commissioner within two weeks.

New Delhi District Police had received complaints regarding the alleged incidents, which were subsequently transferred to Crime Branch for inquiry, according to a media report on Oct 5. Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Neha Yadav had said, “Around 6 pm on Oct 4, three women, who identified themselves as journalists, lodged a complaint alleging manhandling by Delhi Police officers and staff during their detention on Oct 3. The complaints relate to alleged incidents during a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The allegations later triggered protests outside Parliament Street police station, where demonstrators gathered over the alleged misconduct involving the women journalists.
