Chennai: US-based electric carmaker Tesla is set to expand its footprint in India, with the company expected to open its experience store in Chennai this week. It will be Tesla’s third outlet in the southern region, after Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and its sixth store in India.
Sept has been a strong month for Tesla in India, with sales of about 150 units so far. The company has sold more than 600 cars in the country in the calendar year to date, of which 38 units have been sold in Tamil Nadu . While electric car sales in Tamil Nadu have crossed 19,700 units so far in 2026, luxury carmakers including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo and BYD have sold about 800 electric luxury cars together, in addition to Tesla’s volumes. The Model Y Premium RWD is priced at Rs 50.89 lakh and offers seating for five, 2,138 litres of storage space, a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and a range of up to 500 km, according to company sources. Priced from Rs 61.99 lakh, it offers up to 2,539 litres of cargo space, accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 5 seconds and has a range of up to 681 km.

The Chennai experience centre is expected to help the company expand sales in the state. Tesla currently offers two Model Y variants in India — the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and the Model Y L All-Wheel Drive. The Model Y L AWD, aimed at buyers seeking more space, comes with three rows and six seats. Both variants are available to order through Tesla’s website, with deliveries across India. Tesla also offers home-charging support across states. The company has highlighted the safety credentials of both models, which have received top ratings from multiple global safety organisations.
