The crash took place around 5.30 am nearly 35 km from the Sultanpur district headquarters. The bus was travelling from Gurgaon to Bihar with around 80 passengers on board. It left Gurgaon about 4 pm on Wednesday and was headed towards Gorakhpur before continuing onward into Bihar. Police identified the deceased as Shyam Lal Mandal (28), Vinod Mandal (50) and Kiran Devi (60), all residents of Bihar.
Police teams launched a rescue operation, freeing passengers trapped amid mangled seats and shifting the injured to nearby hospitals. Baldirai circle officer Ashutosh Kumar confirmed the fatalities and said families had been informed. Passengers said the bus had been pulled over on the roadside after the driver told them he needed to use the toilet. Injured passenger Sushil Mandal said he was travelling with his mother, Kiran Devi, to Supaul for Rakshabandhan after working as a factory labourer in Haryana. He said his mother died in the collision while he suffered injuries. Another injured passenger, Akash Kumar, said people woke to a loud impact and confusion. He said the force of the collision pushed the bus forward before it came to a halt. Police said CCTV footage from the expressway is being examined to identify the vehicle and trace the driver.
Many passengers were returning home to celebrate Rakshabandhan . The driver reportedly got down while the bus doors remained closed, leaving passengers inside. During the halt, a truck struck the stationary bus from behind at high speed, crushing the rear portion and damaging several rows of seats. Most passengers were asleep at the time, and those seated in the last three to four rows bore the brunt of the impact. Passengers alleged that the driver had been stopping frequently on the expressway to let people board and get down, despite requests not to halt at unsafe locations.
