Kanpur: Two men have been arrested for allegedly cheating Kanpur’s Jajmau-based exporter Mohd Ahmad Lari of Rs 2.66 crore on the pretext of high investment returns, police said. The money was routed through 89 bank accounts across 18 states. Over 10 others are allegedly part of the gang. Lari transferred the amount in 21 transactions to 18 accounts of 13 firms located in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and other states. The money was later moved to 89 accounts. Akhil allegedly opened 31 accounts in his and his family members’ names using fake firms. Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said one of the accounts had received Rs 25 lakh. The person linked to it reportedly had around 35 accounts and faces 38 NCRP complaints and seven cases in several states. Transactions worth about Rs 3.24 crore were made through the accounts on Aug 5 and 8. Police have put about Rs 30 lakh on hold and are examining second-layer accounts, beneficiaries and possible links to investment fraud, APK file scams and digital arrest cases.

Police said the fraudster contacted Lari as Ananya Kulkarni from four different mobile numbers. He told police he was connected to Kaily and Rao of Mumbai, who called him to a hotel there and transferred the cheated amount to their accounts. Police said Akhil had obtained the Central Bank’s CIB facility using fake documents, which allowed money received in one account to be instantly transferred to hundreds of accounts.

The arrested men have been identified as Akhil Singh Chauhan, a BCA graduate from Ahirwan in Chakeri, and his associate Satendra Yadav alias Tony of Safipur. Three cases have been registered in Kanpur.
