Officials said Haveri’s dry terrain, thorny vegetation, rocky patches and agricultural areas provide a suitable habitat for Indian pangolins. The pangolin was spotted at the house of Chandranna, a staff member at the tourist lodge. His family noticed the frightened animal and, without disturbing it, immediately alerted the forest department. Forest personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the animal. Range forest officer Siddamma Karigar, urban sub-range forest officer Manjunath Hander and forest guard Basavaraj Kulkarni of the Guttal patrol unit were among those involved in the operation. Termite mounds and ant colonies also support their survival. However, their nocturnal and secretive nature means they are rarely encountered by people. Following the rescue, the pangolin was examined by a veterinarian and found to be free of injuries and in stable health. Download the TOI App.
