Kanpur: Police on Friday have detained a car driver accused of orchestrating the theft of Rs 4.31 lakh from a goat trader Abid Ahmad on Kanpur-Aligarh highway in Shivrajpur at dawn on Thursday. Ahmad, a resident of Chaubepur town, left for Hardoi livestock market with other traders in an Eeco car around 5 am. The masked assailants brandished a country-made pistol and took a bag containing Rs 4.31 lakh. During questioning, Ahmad’s driver, Asif, allegedly disclosed that the car was carrying more than Rs 9 lakh and that he had agreed on a share with the assailants for conducting reconnaissance.

Police traced a black car bearing a “Press” marking through CCTV footage. Police station in-charge Amit Singh said the driver had arranged the theft. Four others were allegedly involved in the case. Shortly before Kakupur, youths in a black SUV struck the car’s window with a stick and forced it to stop. He also disclosed the identities of the five people involved in the incident. Police have taken three youths into custody and are searching for two others. A team is working to solve the case and recover the stolen money. Download the TOI App.
